The John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation announces the award of 20 scholarships for postgraduate studies (Master's level) across all scientific fields and 2 additional postgraduate scholarships in the field of Maritime and Shipping Studies through the Neraida Floating Museum (Legal Entity Under Private Law) for universities in Greece and abroad, starting in the academic year 2015-2016.

The non-profit legal entity under private law with the name " Neraida Floating Museum " owns the ship "Neraida" on which the business history of John S. Latsis is presented. Its objectives include, among others, the promotion of actions and initiatives related to the fields of Greek shipping history, business history and the attraction of young people to the maritime profession.

1. REQUIREMENTS

Applications are open to those who meet all the following requirements:

  • Possess a high school diploma from a high school in Greece.
  • Hold a degree from public higher educational institutions (Universities and TEI) in Greece or equivalent higher educational institutions abroad. Applications may be also submitted by degree holders who will graduate no later than the June 2015 examination period.
  • Have an undergraduate average grade of at least eight (8,00) or 80% of the equivalent grade scale. Candidates with less than an eight (8.00) average grade who are in the top 10% graduates in the academic year in which they received their degree are also eligible to apply.
  • Documented financial inability to meet the cost of studies.

2. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

  • Copy of a university/university degree or certificate of completion of studies from the registry including detailed illustration of grades awarded. For graduating students, a detailed transcript of grades and a declaration of the courses they are required to complete by the end of their studies is required. Candidates who have an average grade less than eight (8,00) are required to provide a certificate from the registry of their educational institution stating they are among the 10 % of the graduates in the year in which they received their degree. A similar certificate must also be provided by graduating students, i.e. to certify that they are in the top 10% of their graduating year.
  • Confirmation of the applicant's offer of a place on the postgraduate programme for which the scholarship is being applied for.
  • For candidates in postgraduate programmes of Greek universities who have not undertaken entry exams for a programme or candidates from foreign universities who do not have a place offer, it is necessary to attach a declaration stating the title of the postgraduate programme they have applied for, the university and the dates of the entry exams and/or the date of response regarding a place offer. Applicants are only eligible to apply for a scholarship for one Master's programme which once applied for, cannot be changed as their application will not be evaluated and will thus be ineligible of a scholarship.
  • A copy of the curriculum of the Postgraduate Programme for which the applicant is applying for a scholarship.
  • Contact details (name, telephone number & e-mail) of two professors of the department in which the applicant completed their undergraduate studies. The applicant must have informed the two professors that the Foundation is likely to contact them regarding their academic performance.
  • Title and abstract (up to 200 words) of their undergraduate thesis, if available, and name of supervisor. If no thesis has been written, title and abstract of any work carried out as part of the applicant's undergraduate studies.
  • A statement of purpose, up to 500 words in length, in which the candidate will evaluate their academic progress to date, state the reasons why they have chosen the specific postgraduate programme over other similar programmes in Greece or abroad, and how this choice relates to their future plans and aspirations.
  • A copy of the high school diploma and a copy of the individual pass certificate. If the candidate has attended a department of a Greek university for which admission to the course required an examination in special subjects, the certificate of admission is also required.
  • Income tax statement for the last two years depicting family income and, if available, the income tax statement for the last two years for the applicant's personal income.
  • Certificate of marital status.
  • Official certificate if the parent(s) is/are unemployed.
  • Applicant’s declaration they are not funding their studies from any institution, through a scholarship or fellowship scheme or by working in a research project or university laboratory. If the candidate has applied for a scholarship or is going to apply for a scholarship from any institution, a declaration stating the name of the institution and the date of announcement of the results must be attached.
  • Any other document proving any other relevant social criteria (e.g. loss of a parent, illness, etc.).

3. SELECTION

In addition to the academic record of each candidate, during the selection process of scholarship awardees the following will be also considered: quality of the postgraduate programme of study, the statement of purpose, the candidate’s financial situation, social criteria (e.g. unemployment of parents, health issues of the candidate, polygamy, etc.) and the general quality of the application submitted. The Foundation reserves the right, at its discretion, to invite candidates for a personal interview at any stage of the evaluation process.

4. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS & TIMETABLE

Applications should be only submitted electronically, from Monday 20 April to Tuesday 12 May 2015, via the online submission system, which will be accessible from the Foundation's website www.latsis-foundation.org only during the submission period. Candidates must submit the supporting documents in electronic format (scanned) and, if selected, will be asked to provide certified copies of the documents they have submitted electronically.

Two public calls will be active in the online system. The Foundation’s general postgraduate scholarship programme and the programme of the “Neraida Floating Museum”. Applicants will choose which of the two programmes they wish to be considered for and apply online accordingly.
