The long-standing collaboration between the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and the National Museum of Natural History Goulandris continued during the 2023-2024 school year, with the goal of strengthening environmental education and awareness. Within this framework, the Foundation supported the educational programme “Renewable Energy Sources and Hydrogen Technology”, implemented at the GAIA Centre for Environmental Research and Education, as part of the educational series titled “Smart Cities and Sustainability”. This series of educational programmes aims to familiarise children with the concept and benefits of smart cities, as well as to introduce them to the technologies used in their development.
Specifically, through the interactive programme “Renewable Energy Sources and Hydrogen Technology”, Junior High School students and students in the fifth and sixth grades of Primary School had the opportunity to learn about renewable energy sources, how they can contribute to environmental protection and pollution reduction, and how they can be utilised for electricity production. As part of the Programme, students participated in simple experiments and constructions and explored the future possibilities offered by new technologies.
Additionally, in 2024, with the support of the Foundation, the educational film “DINOSAURS: A Story of Survival” was presented at the digital “Projection Dome,” offering visitors the opportunity to learn in a scientific way about the evolution of life. The “Dome”, which was technologically upgraded through a previous donation from the Foundation, serves as an important recreational and educational tool of the Museum, providing an interactive introduction to the planet, its landscapes, vegetation, and wildlife.
162 students participated in the educational programme “Renewable Energy Sources & Hydrogen Technology”, while a total of 1,480 students took part in all 3 educational programmes of the “Smart Cities and Sustainability” thematic series.
In 2024, a total of 333 screenings of the film “DINOSAURS: A Story of Survival” were held, attended by 990 students and 3,592 visitors.
In 2024, the Museum was designated as the National Museum of Natural History, in recognition of its diverse research and educational work.
