Realization of optical transistor action based on optical black holes

The proposed research aims at assesing the potential of the optical horizon effect in realizing nanophotonic optical transistors in photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs). PCWs combine a strong light confinement and the enhancement of nonlinear effects that can further support the manifestation of the optical horizon. In the present study, the interaction of two light signals under this effect will be studied inside the PCW. We will carry out a feasibility study and we will also assess the technology from a practical point of view. Requirements on various system parameters will be analyzed such as the optical power, the signal duration, etc. The results of the study may lead to a new generation of smart nanophotonic circuits that will support the further development of the internet and may even lead to the realization of optical computers.

This project was evaluated and funded as part of the Foundation’s effort to support research teams with all their members being under 40 years old.
