Research developed on two levels: A) Construction of a database of 1,018 audiovisual testimonies by 850 Greek Jews, survivors of the Holocaust. These testimonies, collected in different periods, places and languages and kept in archives abroad as well as in Greece, are recorded and catalogued in β€A Guide to an Archiveβ€, accessible through the Internet. B) The archive the database refers to may support historical research, which, without underestimating the need for accuracy, integrates the multiple levels of reality and the survivors’ experiences, deepening the understanding of central issues in the historiography of the Holocaust.
The three pilot essays conducted focused on: i) the transformations of witnessing by placing the memory of Greek survivors in the historical context of the interview; the shaping of a collective narrative and of an affective community of the survivors is examined by taking into account the aspects of class and gender giving the testimony, ii) the role of the camp experiences in the transformations of the uses of the β€national identity of Jewish male Salonicans and iii) the transformations of memory according to post-war settlement of the survivors either in Greece or in the USA, and in relation to the public recognition of the genocide in the two countries.
