YEAR

PROGRAMME
POLYPHONICA

POLYPHONICA is an Athens-based civil non-profit organization with cultural and social objectives. Founded in 2011, it offers children and youths between 6 and 17 years of age who come from socially and economically vulnerable backgrounds the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and develop their creativity, regardless of their place of origin, religion or language.

POLYPHONICA members participate in artistic group activities and get to learn about music, dance, theater and more. Their collective experience, collaboration and communication among each other helps fulfill the children’s vital need to strengthen their self-esteem and self-confidence.

Among others, POLYPHONICA has created an intercultural children's and youths choir, a modern dance and improvisation workshop, as well as a theatrical workshop. It also offers children with special musical skills the opportunity to learn the instrument of their choice at the Athens Conservatoire, for free.

Within the framework of the POLYPHONICA mission, which is to offer children and youths between 6 and 17 years of age from socially and economically vulnerable families the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and develop their creativity, a new programme was designed, focusing on theater. It is called Polyphonicact and it is a theatrical educational programme implemented in collaboration with the PORTA Theater and supported by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation for the year 2018. Under this programme, about twenty children, aged between nine and sixteen, get the chance to learn more about theater and to acquire basic knowledge on narration, reenactment and acting, by playing and having fun.

The children participating in Polyphonicact meet once a week at the PORTA Theater, where the stage is all theirs for a full two hours. Every two-hour lesson is structured in a way that children can learn and try basic narrative tools, such as physical theater, musical theater, creative writing, stage design and more. The purpose of each lesson is for children to play and experiment creatively with each subject, so that they gradually begin to develop their own personal way of theatrical expression and to find their place within a theatrical group.
