Donation of Medical Equipment and Area Restructuring Works

The 2nd University Cardiology Department is located at the “ATTIKON” University General Hospital and has been operating since 2003 to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services in all areas of modern clinical and laboratory Cardiology. Since its early years of operation, the Department has conducted clinical and preclinical research in all fields of Cardiovascular Medicine; at the same time, it plays a key role in terms of teaching, by training undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Medical School of the University of Athens as well as Cardiology residents, and organising seminars, congresses and conferences.

In 2020 the Hemodynamic Laboratory of the 2nd University Cardiology Department – which constitutes an integral part thereof, having offered high quality medical services and developed a significant research and training activity in the field of Interventional Cardiology – was suspended due to irreversible damage to its equipment. The John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation proceeded with the supply of a state-of-the-art coronary angiography system to be used for cardiology purposes and undertook the cost of technical works for the configuration of the area to ensure the proper and timely installation of the equipment.

The purpose of this donation was to enable the reopening of the Hemodynamic Laboratory and furthermore to ensure the Department’s smooth operation and a faster attendance on patients. The supply of the new coronary angiography system to the Department’s Hemodynamic Laboratory has restored the possibility to perform electrophysiological tests and invasive treatments on patients with arrhythmias; it has also allowed for an increase in the total number of patients attended to, as regards patients in need of medical intervention such as the implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators.

• Over 2,000 patients are expected to benefit from the supply and operation of the new coronary angiography system.
• 1,200 coronary angiograms and 460 coronary angioplasty surgeries are performed in the Hemodynamic Laboratory of “ATTIKON” U.G.H. on an annual basis.
