Contribution of earth observation data and Geographical Information Systems to mapping and managing flood events in Greece
YEAR
2011
PROGRAMME
European Space Agency-European Space Research Institute

Among natural disasters, floods are considered as one of the most important catastrophes, as they affect more population compared to any other natural disaster worldwide, posing serious risks for life, property and infrastructure. In Europe only, the total flood losses over the last 25 years amount to over 100 billion Euros. Using satellite images and systems for the collection and processing of geographical/ geospatial data, this study contributes to flood management in Greece by recording and investigating flood incidences of the last 20 years (1992-2011).

The database created within the project offers the possibility of creating different thematic maps of the Greek territory, using Prefectures as points of reference and depending on the end-user needs, such as the number of floods, their seasonal or monthly distribution, etc. Although the content of the database is not exhaustive, it adequately represents the distribution and dispersion of floods over the country. Additionally, flood susceptibility and risk maps were created for part of the district of Thrace in Northeastern Greece, which was studied in detail based on the available information.

The results of this investigation are publicly available on the web through the project website, which offers the possibility of further updates to the information collected, thus contributing to the increase of available geospatial data and to the improvement of natural disaster management in Greece.

The website created as a result of the project is available here (in Greek).
