“The history of food in Greece from the prehistoric era to nowadays” is the brand new production of SKAI TV, funded and supported scientifically by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation.

A five-episode documentary which revives the dietary habits in Greece over the centuries, from the prehistoric times until today,  with the support of an interdisciplinary research team consisted of historians, archaeologists, social anthropologists, nutritionists, herbalists who spotlight unknown aspects of the past through modern scientific approaches.

The documentary follows the chronological path from the prehistoric era, the ancient years, the Byzantium and the Ottoman years until the establishment of the modern Greek State, World War II and nowadays.

Each episode includes interviews with prestigious Greek and foreign scientists, scenes from archaeological and historical sites throughout Greece as well as in cultural sites abroad like Constantinople, Cappadocia and Asia Minor, Cyprus, Marseille, Sicily and Rome. Researchers and experts of nutrition, illuminate unknown aspects in the evolution of Greek food and culinary skills and also the cultural influences that consist an integral part of Greek diet and identity.

The documentary will have representations of the daily life from prehistoric times to the 20th century, depicting the exact objects, utensils and clothing of each era, as well as rare historical documents, oral testimonies, films and photos combined with visual effects, 3D animation and aerial filming.

The research of the documentary is conducted by the scientific team of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation in cooperation with the creative team of ANEMON Productions.


Interesting facts

Nutrition consists an interdisciplinary field of research which can illustrate different aspects of the past of our society. At the same time, the documentary familiarises the viewer with the methodologies employed by experts in order to approach the issue. Through the study of the nutritional habits, as well as the analysis of materials and their various meanings, one can understand progressively the economic, social, political and cultural influences that prevailed in Greece throughout the centuries.
