Programme "Scientific projects"

Studying the advancement of agriculture, the technical improvement of agrarian production and their significance for the society of Greek countryside though the collections of the Agricultural Museum (1920-1960)

Hellenic Open University

The foundation of the Agricultural University of Athens in 1920 marked the change in strategies of the agrarian production by organizing and systematizing the agricultural training on higher level. It was an institution with theoretical but mostly practical character that merged all major scientific disciplines, decisively contributing to the improvement of production by introducing new techniques as well as farming and manufacturing machinery. This change had as a result a better economy, a developed rural society and hence a modern state.
The aim of this project is to portray how this change occurs, studying the history of the Museum objects being located at several laboratories of the university, which were the backbone of the education and training offered at this institution during 1920-1960. The exhibits as well as the scientists who staffed the laboratories will be the two research lines along which we intend to upgrade the collections of the Museum and advertise them further as valuable cultural product and a modernizing tool of agricultural production and rural society.
