Geochemical and environmental characteristics of urban soils in Athens focusing on the mobility and human bioaccessibility of toxic chemical elements

Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment, School of Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

2013

The proposed scientific project aims to produce the urban geochemical map of Athens area based on multi-element analysis of surface soils. Emphasis will be given to the spatial distribution of potentially toxic chemical elements. The study will focus on the elucidation of natural and anthropogenic processes that govern the chemical composition of soils and the potential effects to the human health concerning heavy metal concentration levels. Sampling of soils will be based on a regular 1km x 1km grid laid over the survey area, covering more than 200km2. The sampling locations have already been determined, and priority is being given to playgrounds, schools and urban parks. The research outcome will contribute to the evaluation of quality characteristics of urban soils in Athens, whereas in the instance of elevated easily mobilized and human bioaccessible concentrations of harmful metals, the optimum remediation options will be recommended.
