7th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics

Since 1996 the Society for Space and Astronomy, which is situated in Volos,Greece, has been organising the Panhellenic Student Astronomy Competition, through which the students that represent Greece at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics are chosen.
With the support of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the 7th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics was held at the city of Volos, Greece, from Jyly 27th to August 5. 180 students and 100 accompagnying team leaders from 37 participated in the competition. The Greek delegation comprised 10 students, of which the majority acquired a medal or distinction, namely: one silver and four bronze medals, and four honorary distinctions. A student from Romania won ther gold medal, while the delegations from Iran, Thailand and Slovakia achieved a good overall performance. This Olympiad was the debute for teams from USA, Canada, New Zealand and Cyprus.

For the first time, the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics is held in Greece.
