DEMOCRACY WORKSHOP: THE LAWS AND RULES AS DEFENDERS OF OUR RIGHTS
1st Primary School of Koropi
Through the implementation of a non-standard cooperative methodology, based on pupils' living experience and feedback techniques, the purpose of the programme was the gradual realisation of the value of Democracy, in which rights, laws and rules play a pivotal role. The activities started with an imaginary situation involving pupils in groups and contributed to the creation of group cohesion among the members. Group activities gradually led to a more individual level, as the findings of each group were evaluated each time in classroom together with the pupils.
The programme was based on the European Council’s COMPASITO Manual and the “Democracy and Education” educational material of the Hellenic Parliament Foundation. The activities included the schemes "A Constitution for Our Team", "Every Vote Maters", "Intimidation Scenes", "Why Do We Need Rules?" (pedagogical workshops) and "Our Rights". The activities also involved extracurricular visits.
The basic intangible yet substantial outcome of the programme was the realisation of the value of Democracy and Rights, which had both a direct and an indirect impact on the pupils. Equally important was their "exposure" to forms of learning that focus on personal skills and the participatory approach.
