WE UNDERSTAND AND LEARN WITH ALLOPHONE PUPILS: BASIC CONCEPTS OF PHYSICS WITH THE AID OF TECHNOLOGY. CLIL METHOD

Studying at schools with pupils from different countries, who speak different languages, enriches the concepts of civilisation, culture, thought and communication skills in a school. This programme was an attempt to make pupils understand the basic concepts of physics, which they encounter in their everyday lives, such as brightness, distance, temperature, humidity, volume of sound, etc., while acquiring programming skills and algorithmic thinking skills.

 

Through the physics class, we set for the pupils the theoretical foundation on concepts such as electricity, energy, energy conversions and basic electrical circuits, while at the computer science class, pupils were introduced to computer programming through the visual programming language based on Scratch blocks. Then, pupils working in the IT Laboratory in groups of two or three people created and wrote together a programming code, and, with the help of special sensors and a microcontroller per group, they entered into the computer and processed measurements related to the basic physics concepts mentioned above, creating simple interactive applications.

 

The core of the individual activities was the Arduino Uno R3 open source microcontroller, one of the most popular platforms for robotics applications and automation, with particularly beneficial educational results.

 

Also, the programme was linked to several fields of the curriculum of 5th Grade physics. At the same time, several objectives of the curriculum and syllabus were served, encouraging experimentation, application of research models, linking of classes to everyday life, creating motives for elaboration and deepening, as well as cross-thematic approach in teaching.

 

The Informatics and ICT class programme was linked to the utilisation of research plans  (analyse, select, synthesise, use, apply); multimedia expression (create and collaborate); computer programming and understanding of the interaction between hardware and software; solving problems with digital tools; recognising the applications of modern digital technology in various fields and, lastly, understanding the potential of computers as programmable digital machines in a wide range of fields, extending from objects used in everyday life to research and science.

 

On a more general pedagogical level, pupils realised that individual educational subjects may be constructively combined to create a single path to knowledge, and that they themselves can gain autonomy through the discovery of knowledge by experiential and research methods; understand the importance of group and cooperative spirit in the learning process; acquire skills in analysing, synthesising and transforming data and information; develop their critical thinking; adopt a positive attitude towards the benefits of New Technologies in the modern social environment; and use them in a proper and constructive way.
