The first meeting of the Informal Reflection Group of the Subsidiary Committee for the 1970 UNESCO Convention
Ministry of Culture and Sports - General Secretary of Culture and Tourism
The first meeting of the Informal Reflection Group of the Subsidiary Committee for the 1970 UNESCO Convention (Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property) was held from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th June, at Delphi. Greece was a prime mover in convening this meeting.
Experts from seventeen countries and from international organizations (UNESCO, INTERPOL, UNIDROIT) participated in the meeting, which took place at Delphi’s European Cultural Centre in Delphi. Greece was represented by the General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sport Maria Andreadaki-Vlazaki, who is president of the committee in question, having been elected to that position in September 2015 by professional staff at the Ministry and representatives of other bodies (the Foreign Ministry, the Hellenic Police, the Ministry of Finance, the Region of Epirus, the Municipality of Delphi).
The proceedings of the meeting were centred on specialized subjects to do with the protection of the cultural heritage from illegal trafficking and specifically the strengthening of collaboration in the international community for effective policing of the illicit trade in cultural objects, particularly via the internet, and standardization and harmonization of procedures for confiscation and return of illegally acquired antiquities. There was moreover extensive discussion of the results of the meeting that took place in Paris (30th March 2015) under the aegis of UNESCO, the Subsidiary Committee and the French Auctioneers’ Association.
The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Culture and Sport and conducted with the generous support of UNESCO and the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation. Its conclusions will be adopted at the 4th Ordinary Session of the Subsidiary Committee in Paris in September 2016.
