John S Latsis Ileians' Scholarships Foundation (1967-2011)
Being steadily oriented to offering to his birthplace, Ileia, John Latsis in 1967, established the John S. Latsis Ileians' Scholarships Foundation, aiming to foster and support young people originating from the County. The Foundation, among others, gave scholarships for undergraduate studies at higher education institutions of Greece, as well as for postgraduate studies at universities of Greece and abroad.
Since its establishment, the Ileians' Scholarships Foundation was under the joint supervision of the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Finance. It have granted approximately 2.000 scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students, financial aid to pupils and students, cash prizes to excellent high school students from the county. Following the catastrophic fires of 2007 in Ileia, the Foundation implemented the Program for Granting Extraordinary Financial Assistance to Ileian Students Attending Greek Universities (AEI and TEI), who were from regions that were hit by the extensive fires. The total amount that was granted though the program was €4,000,000.
The cycle of the 45 years of presence of the Ileians' Scholarships Foundation in education came to an end, in 2012. However, the offer to the district continues as the scholarship program and all other activities are undertaken entirely by the John s. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation.
